About The Annex
The Annex sits directly west of the University of Toronto and takes its character from that neighbour, bookshops, repertory cinemas, late-night cafes, and a cultural strip along Bloor that has held onto its independent stores longer than most of the city. The housing is largely Victorian and Edwardian, red brick, turrets, deep porches, and much of it is carved into student rentals and professor-owned two-flats.
It's one of the most walkable and best-served transit pockets in Toronto: two subway lines meet at Spadina, the 511 Bathurst streetcar runs north-south, and Bloor has protected bike lanes east and west. Families and academics compete with students for the same housing stock, which keeps prices firm and turnover lively.
A European neighbourhood feel transplanted onto red-brick Toronto streets: sidewalk bookshops, long café tables, academic debates spilling into the street. Walkable to a fault, most residents don't own cars, and perpetually shaded by 100-year-old trees.

Jean Sibelius Square

Taddle Creek Park
A shaded pocket park on the old Taddle Creek course, with a community garden and bocce courts.
Bickford Park
Big open green space off Bloor West with baseball diamonds, an off-leash dog area and the Bickford Park farmers' market on Saturdays.
A genuine mix: university students and grad students (the U of T adjacency), university professors and academic-family homeowners, long-tenure retirees in the Victorian walk-ups, and a steady flow of young professional couples. The median age is among the lowest in Toronto's central core, and renters significantly outnumber owners.
Bloor Street West's protected bike lanes have been extended through the heart of the Annex, further cementing the car-light identity. A handful of Victorian homes have been sensitively converted into multi-unit rentals, which is easing some student-housing pressure. The heritage-overlay zoning keeps the streetscape largely frozen in amber, by design.
